The Mill On The Floss
We are very much looking forward to our school production next week! Please note the following changes since our last communication:
- Tuesday 26th November is now a Dress Rehearsal (not a performance)
- All performances now start at 7:00pm
South Island School present a modern adaptation of celebrated Victorian novelist George Eliot’s most autobiographical novel – The Mill on The Floss. The Mill on The Floss dramatises the tragedy of a young girl Maggie Tulliver, chafing against sexist restrictions whilst her less able brother Tom has all of the opportunities she craves. Maggie’s intellectual potential makes it doubly ironic that Tom’s privileges are wasted on him. He has neither interest in, nor capacity for the expensive gentleman’s education his father believes will guarantee his upward mobility. However, Eliot does not dismiss Tom’s struggles either in his development to adulthood. Dramatic, gripping, exciting and moving, the play’s human universal themes are as relevant now as they were in Maggie’s day.
