SIS HKAYP News – October 2018

GOLD EXPLORATION PRESENTATION EVENING

Please note that the Annual Gold Exploration Presentation Evening will be on 13 December. Here the 13 Gold students will talk about their trip to the high mountains of Kangding County, Sichuan and share their purposes with you.

BRONZE AND NEW SILVER CAMPS

This was our biggest HKAYP camp to date with a total of 110 students in 17 groups, supported by 28 staff on 3 different camps.

17 Year 12 students and four staff members were camping and hiking the MacLehose Trail, which included six students new to HKAYP. They had a challenging but successful camp and hike, which was the first practice towards their Silver Award.

A further 30 of our Year 10 students went to the Outward Bound Centre at Tai Mong Tsai near Sai Kung and were put through their paces by outward bound instructors. By all accounts, this was a challenging but successful camp.

The main body of 59 Year 10 students were based at Pak Sha O Youth Hostel, supervised and led by 22 of our own volunteer staff. The staff were assisted by five Year 13 Gold students who made an outstanding contribution.

On all 3 camps, the students learned or refreshed key expedition skills including teamwork, leadership, first aid, navigation route planning, cooking and washing up and tent pitching. Everyone had a great positive attitude, and the help of some good weather helped there to be a huge amount of learning and personal development, so hopefully everyone is ready for their next camps later in the term.
