Principal’s Vlog

Dear Parents and Guardians

Welcome to the November edition of our newsletter. As usual, we will highlight the remarkable achievements of our students and all they have accomplished over the month. However, in this particular edition, I would like to take the opportunity to recognise our parents and guardians for your tremendous support. Your involvement in our school has made a significant difference in creating a nurturing and thriving environment for our students. Together, we form a strong community that fosters growth and encourages excellence in all of our children.

Today, our ParentTeacher Association (PTA) hosted a wonderful new joiners lunch, giving parents the opportunity to come to school, connect with fellow parents, and build relationships with our teachers. It was a fantastic event that exemplified the sense of community we strive to cultivate within our school.

I would also like to express my appreciation for your overwhelming presence and support during our school musical production, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.  It was a resounding success, and the accomplishments of all those involved were truly celebrated. From those of you who joined us for all three nights to those parents who supported our students, even though their own children were not performing. Your encouragement and support are invaluable.

I also want to acknowledge your cooperation in adhering to the drop-off guidelines in the morning and at the end of the day. Your support has greatly contributed to a safer campus environment where students can enter and exit the school calmly, setting the tone for a productive day ahead.

As we move into the final three weeks of this term, we are excited about the many opportunities we will have to work together. Whether it is through volunteering your time and expertise within the school or supporting your children’s learning journey at home, we genuinely appreciate the unique contributions of our South Island School parents.

In closing, I wish you a lovely weekend filled with joy and relaxation. Thank you once again for your tremendous support.

Carolyn Andrews

Interim Principal

RECENT HAPPENINGS

(1) JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOUR DREAMCOAT

The three show run of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat is complete! With over 80 students in the cast, band, and crew, the production was filled with excitement, vibrance, and FUN!!! Over 700 members of the audience packed our halls and brought great energy and support for our students.  Thank you to all the parents, students, friends, alumni, teachers and anyone who took the time to support our students.  You really can feel the performers feeding off of the audience’s energy.  Shoutout to all our performers for their wonderful performance, tireless efforts, and commitment to the production over Term 1, and a massive shoutout to Mr Jolly for bringing Joseph to life at SIS.
(2) SHTEPI MAD WEEK

This week was SHTEPI MaD WEEK! Throughout the week, Shtepi House organised various events to promote their chosen theme this year, Animal Welfare Awareness!  Our students enjoyed an all-school scavenger hunt during lunchtime on Monday, an Origami Competition on Wednesday, Mascot Races on Thursday, and a trivia session in tutor time and face painting on Friday to cap off the week.  This year, Shtepi is working with the SPCA to compile donations of canned goods (pet food) and new blankets for the winter season.  If you would like to contribute, please bring items in by Monday before Shtepi House sends their donation to SPCA!

(3) Y10 MEDIA – ‘MAKE’ VIDEOS

As the culmination of AFP Media Y10 learning in the first unit of the course, which focuses on TV, students have been tested in a challenging but fun multi-camera studio-based context. More specifically, students are set the brief of creating a ‘Make,’ in which presenters have a maximum of 5 minutes to show off the making of whatever product they would like. For instance, how to decorate Christmas cupcakes in five easy steps.

The task promotes the importance of teamwork and collaboration on set as students take on various roles: director, PA, floor manager, Visual Titles Mixer, camera operator and presenters/host.

(3) SUSCO UNIFORM DONATIONS

SIS Sustainability Council is currently running Stage One of their new Uniform Repurposing Initiative, and we are asking our community for your OLD OR UNUSED SIS/ESF UNIFORM JACKETS OR HOODIES

The Uniform Repurposing Initiative is a new scheme encouraging students and parents in our school community to recycle old uniforms. These clothes will be sold back to our own South Island students at lower prices, with all proceeds from the sale going to Redress, – a charity seeking to accelerate the change to a circular fashion industry by educating and empowering both designers and consumers.

If you’re looking for the opportunity to dispose of your unused school jackets/hoodies mindfully, this initiative is an excellent chance to make a difference!

The collection begins on 27 November and till 1 December.

Please note as these are meant to be resold, we kindly ask that you wash the items before donating and exclude any items that have been damaged (i.e. holes, mould, missing buttons, broken zippers, unwashable stains)

For further questions, please contact SusCo member Dayeon Lee (leed12@webmail.sis.edu.hk)

(4) WEEZ WALK

Join ESF in supporting the Weez Walk 2024

I am proud to share the news that ESF is an official supporting organisation of the Weez Walk 2024. This annual fundraising event is close to the heart of our community as it was set up in memory of Jamie Bruno, one of our students. Jamie took his own life in 2017 when he was 15 years old, and his parents founded the Weez Walk to raise awareness about the warning signs of a potential suicide to help prevent tragedy. The event name is also a tribute to Jamie, who loved street art and used “Weez” as his graffiti art signature. The Weez Walk route follows the 60km coastal trail around Hong Kong Island and can be completed in one go or many shorter stages during the event period, from 20 January until 25 February. Registration is now open with a special discount before 30 November. All proceeds will fund the suicide prevention programme of youth services charity KELY Support Group. Let’s show our full support and help make this event a huge success.

(5) BRADBURY SCHOOL WINTER NIGHT MARKET

The Bradbury PTA is organising the Winter Night Market, which will be held on Friday, December 1st, 5 pm – 8 pm. We are very excited about it as it has been some years since we last organised something of this scale. There will be great music, food, games, gifts and, most importantly, lots of laughter and friendly faces!

This will for sure be a festive event for Bradbury families and friends to join. We also welcome anyone who is connected to our Bradbury community. Therefore, we would like to extend our invitation to the South Island community as well, as many of our old students are now at South Island, and lots of our Year 6 students will also be moving up to your school. We’d love to meet old students and connect with new ones!

(6) APPOINTMENT OF GORDON NG TO THE SOUTH ISLAND SCHOOL COUNCIL

We are pleased to announce that Mr Gordon Ng has been appointed Community Representative of South Island School Council for three years.  Gordon is currently a Partner at Dentons LLP, one of the largest law firms in the world.  Thank you Gordon for offering your services and welcome to our South Island School Community!

PHASE YEAR 7-9

Message from Head of Phase Year 7-9:

Curriculum:

In our language classes, all year groups (7, 8, and 9) have been actively preparing for their Spanish speaking assessments. This particular aspect of learning a language can be quite challenging, but we are proud to see our students rise to the occasion and demonstrate their progress. ¡Muy buen trabajo! We commend their dedication and effort in mastering a foreign language.

We are thrilled to share that our Year 7 students had an exclusive opportunity to be the first audience for the school production, Joseph. The performance left our young audience captivated and feeling incredibly special for being the first ones to witness this amazing show. It was a memorable experience for all, showcasing our students’ talent and hard work.

We recently shared CEM data with all parents to enhance the parent-school partnership further. In addition, a webinar was run by Mr James Lewis ( VP of Teaching and Learning) to help parents understand how they can best support their child’s educational journey and shed light on how the school utilises this data to provide targeted support and guidance.

Values in Action:

Introducing Unplugged Wednesdays, we have witnessed a flurry of activities and creativity among our students. From downball to arm-wrestling, seeing their innovative ways of connecting and enjoying their recreation time is heartening. Through these shared interests, new friendships are blossoming, providing students with a sense of belonging and camaraderie. We are excited to announce that our Family Bauhinia house leaders and prefects will further support our students by planning various games and competitions. Stay tuned for more details, and get ready to participate!

Our annual Making Links fair has taken place, allowing our Year 9 students to witness the wonderful connections we have with local charities. They also had the chance to learn more about school leadership opportunities and events here at South Island School. These experiences empower our students to make a difference in the community and inspire them to be active contributors to society.

Our Year 9 prefects have exceeded their roles, warmly welcoming prospective parents and leading school tours alongside our Leadership Team. This invaluable experience allows our prefects to showcase their leadership skills and instil a sense of responsibility within our school community. We are proud of their dedication and commitment to representing South Island School.

Staff and students showed their generosity in November by preparing and donating Boxes of Hope. The Family Bauhinia MaD team worked to organise the collection. It was a great way to kick off the festive period—a big thank you to all the families who donated.

Wellbeing:

We proudly applaud our Family Bauhinia students for their exceptional participation and house spirit displayed during the inter-house competitions. Year 7 students showcase their skills in benchball, Year 8 students in water polo and handball, and Year 9 students in volleyball and water polo. The enthusiastic engagement and sportsmanship demonstrated by our students were truly commendable.

Lastly, our current Year 8 prefect team continues their outstanding work in keeping the Space running smoothly for all Family Bauhinia students. They are planning a sustainability project to improve recycling practices for all South Island students. Additionally, they are creating a video that provides insight into the daily life of a prefect, which will serve as a valuable tool for next year’s prefects’ recruitment process. We appreciate their dedication to making our school a better place for everyone.

Ms Syrita Nicholas

PHASE YEAR 10-11

Message from Head of Phase Year 10-11:

Curriculum

Our Year 10 and 11 students always impress me with their incredible ability to balance the demands of a heavy workload, tackling between 8-10 I/GCSE subjects. These students face a vast amount of content to learn and retain, making their academic journey all the more challenging. That’s why witnessing a remarkable turnout of students at the recent Science of Learning workshop featuring the renowned Dr. Jared Cooney was fantastic. This workshop aimed to help our students grasp the importance of being ready and prepared to learn. Dr. Cooney emphasised that engaging with subjects both inside and outside the classroom in an interactive way can significantly enhance our readiness to perform at our best.

As our Year 11 students gear up for their upcoming mock examinations next week, it’s crucial to remind ourselves of the significance of doing our best. Each student is unique, and it’s important to understand that not everyone can achieve the highest grades in every subject. The I/GCSE curriculum is intentionally designed to provide a broad and balanced education. It’s essential for our students to recognise that their exposure to these subjects and their completion of the courses are instrumental in shaping their future studies, regardless of the specific outcomes they achieve. Each step in their educational journey is a valuable experience contributing to personal growth.

Values in Action

Keeping in line with the notion of engaging both inside and outside the classroom, it was great to witness the participation of our Year 10 and 11 students at the Making Links Fair. This event provided a wonderful opportunity for students to interact with representatives from nine external organisations and various student-led councils. By attending this fair, our students could broaden their horizons, explore new interests, and discover many opportunities to make a positive impact within their local community. The insights gained from this event will prove especially valuable for our Year 10 students as they embark on their Community Action projects in Global Citizenship. Encouraging students to actively participate in such initiatives nurtures their sense of responsibility and helps them develop skills that extend beyond the classroom.

Well-Being

Taking time for oneself and finding moments of relaxation are crucial for everyone, particularly for students in the midst of their exam years. I wholeheartedly encourage our students to continue engaging in all aspects of school life. We have an exciting Inter-House event lined up for our Year 10 students on Friday, November 24th, fostering camaraderie and friendly competition within our school community. Additionally, we have sent out information about new enrichment activities for students to choose from next term. It is a positive of South Island School to have a curriculum structure that supports our students’ non-academic pursuits. I urge all students to seize these opportunities and participate in activities beyond the traditional academic curriculum. Personally, I am eager to explore a new hobby myself, as I plan to join the crocheting activity led by one of our talented Year 12 students during lunchtime on Tuesdays.

Ms Laura Beaumont

PHASE YEAR 12-13

Message from Head of Phase Year 12-13:

This is always a very interesting time of the academic year. In Year 12, courses are now in full swing, and students begin to fully embrace their roles as senior members of the school fully. I have been very proud to see Year 12s do important work as leaders at South Island. House Leadership teams are finishing up their House boards and beginning to plan and run House MaD Weeks. They have starred in our Diwali night and our production of Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat. They have contributed back to their community by admirably representing organisations during the Making Links Fair.

In addition to this, from 13-14 November Year 12 students completed their mandatory Collaborative Sciences Project in school. The theme this year was “Modern Living” and saw students collaboratively explore varied and interesting topics such as “How can suborbital unmanned aerial vehicles (SUAVEs) be used over long distances to rapidly deploy aid to disaster-stricken areas?”, “How does noise level affect the reaction time of adolescents?”, and “To what extent can lemon juice be used as an alternative to bleach as a stain remover?”. Year 12 Diploma Programme students have also begun the very preliminary stages of the Extended Essay – exploring topics of interest and looking at previous examples before deciding on what subject they want to pursue for this challenging 4000-word independently completed essay.

Year 13 students continue to feel the pressures of the workload as they reach the culmination of 13 years of schooling. Instead of going on local and overseas trips during MaD Week, Year 13 students had study time, along with support sessions for the Extended Essay in school and Higher Education workshops (including topics like developing an art portfolio, US application support sessions, and mock Multiple Mini Interviews). TOK Essay drafts are now in, to be revised and submitted before the end of the term. Mock exams begin immediately in the new year – a hectic two-week series of exams designed to prepare our Year 13s for their real final exams in May.

We are also beginning the process of preparing Year 11 students to join – in my opinion of course – the best phase of the school! The Year 11 options process began on 15 November with a webinar for parents to introduce them to the process. The rest of the process will follow the timeline below:

  • 17 November – “Application to Senior School” workshop
  • 12 December – Deadline for Application to the Senior School
  • 27 November to 8 December – Year 11 Mocks
  • 9 January – Interviews with HE Counsellors begin
  • 18 January – Subject Options Fair
  • Week of 22 January – Y11 PCC2
  • Mid-January – 1:1 Interview with Head of House
  • 22 January – Options submissions open
  • 6 February – Options submission closes

There were various performance teams from 23 different Asian countries. The group was made up of students from various International schools around Hong Kong who had a desire to form this group. The group held multiple performances throughout the day, delivering outstanding rhythm to the audience.  We are happy to see our students sharing their talents but also their culture.  It is through such sharing that we get to see the many different cultures that make up our community. Well done boys and girls!

Cheers are in order for Hannah Kwok (09K1), who recently performed in the Yip’s Children’s Choir’s production of The Snow Queen.  Hannah earned the honour of being one of the soloists in the children’s opera based on the Hans Christien Andersen classic.  Bravo Hannah!

After two months of gruelling training, Julienne was selected to represent Hong Kong on the U15 team.  The team will be taking on other netball teams from Malaysia, Australia, South Africa, and Singapore.  Good luck Julienne! We’re rooting for you!

(5) MAVIS LAW (07N1) – HK SCOUT ANNUAL PRESIDENT’S CUP ARCHERY TOURNAMENT

In the past week, Mavis Law (07N1) took home a Bronze Trophy in her debut appearance at the Hong Kong Scout Annual President’s Cup Archery Tournament.

Mavis had to go through 6 rounds of competition, in which she had to shoot arrows with her recurve bow at the assigned target that was placed 10 metres away.

Despite competing against more experienced shooters, Mavis showed remarkable resilience and was undeterred by any pressure, allowing her to keep her form and technique that contributed to her success.

Great job Mavis!

TABLE TENNIS

Jing Ying competition (Singles)

Osman Ismail and Rylan Yip represented South Island School during the Jing Ying Table Tennis Tournament in early October.  Both Osman and Ismail won their preliminary matches and made it to the round of 64.

In the Round of 64, Osman, who suffered an injury during MAD week, gave a great effort in his second round match. However, he was unable to overcome the limitation of his injury, falling 2-1 in his match

Rylan was unable to make his match as MaD Week trips were taking place during the second round.

Inter school Grade A (Division 3) – Players: Adam, Osman & Rylan

Our SIS Boys Table Tennis team took to the tables this past Sunday for the HKSSF Inter-School Table Tennis Competition.  The boys team of Adam Ismail, Osman Ismail, and Rylan Yip rallied and smashed their way through the table, conceding only 2 games during the whole tournament.  After winning all their games in the first 2 matches, the boys ran into a close matchup against Concordia Lutheran School – North Point.  With the match tied at 2 games a piece, our boys were able to move on to the championship, winning the deciding game and a spot in the finals.  From there, the SIS boys were able to fend off Tang Shiu Kin Victoria Government Secondary School 3-0 and take the Division 3 crown!

Great job Adam, Osman and Rylan! Congrats on the big win!

BOYS BADMINTON – JING YING – BY COACH TOM LEE

Jack Leung (12M2) and Michael Cha (12C2), representing SIS, participated in the Jing Ying Badminton competition held at Tiu Keng Leng Sports Centre on Monday, November 20, 2023. The tournament brought together top players from schools across Hong Kong, creating an exciting atmosphere where old friends and former teammates faced each other.

Jack had an impressive start to his day. His defence was on point as he consistently denied his opponent any breakthroughs.  His attacks were quick and accurate.  Jack rolled to a  convincing 21-6 victory.

In the second round, Jack faced a tough challenge. Both players made errors early in the match and Jack found himself frequently on the defensive end against powerful cross-court jump smashes. Despite his best efforts, Jack was unable to move on, going down in the Second Round 13-21.

Michael took the court in the afternoon, jumping to an early 4-1 lead. However, his opponent adjusted quickly and held a 19-13 lead. Michael staged an impressive comeback, closing the six-point gap and tying the score at 19 all. Michael searched for opportunities by utilising the corners of the court. Unfortunately, his final smash went just out of play, resulting in a close 19-21 loss. A disappointing finish considering the efforts Michael made in his comeback attemptThe boys gain valuable experience playing the best of the best in Hong Kong.  Both showed great potential in badminton and will undoubtedly continue their journey to refine their skills in the sport. Great efforts Jack and Michael!

B1 NETBALL – BY COACH NICOLA BOSSON

The B1 netball girls took to the court for their HKSSF league games this week against KGV.  Our girls took an early lead and never looked back, cruising to a 32-5 victory against KGV.  KGV coach Angela Chan, shared her compliments to our squad, praising our B1 team for their great talent, depth and versatility! Sophie Arahna was voted as MVP from KGV, Cassandra Skoett was voted by our opponent and the SIS coaches vote went to Sara Harries! Overall it was a brilliant team performance with everyone getting a good run around on the court and us getting to try a few mid-court and shooting combos! We look forward to more games next week

BASKETBALL

U12 Girls Basketball – by Coach Martin Pate

The U12 girl’s basketball team got their second win of the ISSFHK season against Stamford American School HK. The squad rotated well with all squad players each getting a quarter game time again. The stand-out player of the night was Isla Stewart who was playing her last match for SIS before leaving for Australia. She scored multiple baskets with strong drives/layups. The final score was 20–0 officially due to the mercy rule but SIS did not concede & scored another 30 points after the scoreboard was stopped. Up next is a more challenging match against WIS.

U12 BOYS BASKETBALL – BY COACH DARIN SLETHAUG

Great season opener by the U12 boys team, with many of them making their SIS debut. The boys went into the CAIS Lion’s den and needed to settle some early pre-game jitters. Once they settled into a groove the boys played freely.  Excellent all-round play by both teams. An even match all the way through.  Unfortunately, the home team had the home-court advantage and the mighty SIS Stingrays lost a close and very exciting match 27-25.

U14 BOYS BASKETBALL – BY CAPTAIN AIDEN FU

The U14 Basketball game against VSA took place on the 21st of November. The boys were excited for their first away game against VSA. However, they started off cold in the first quarter, conceding points and ending the first quarter in a point deficit. In the second quarter, the boys began to heat up with notable contributions from players like Rajvir Dhillon and Mike Wong. Both the defensive and offensive efforts from all players on the floor intensified, resulting in outscoring VSA in the second quarter.

However, in the second half, the team faced challenges as they conceded numerous points due to drives and post-ups. Additionally, they encountered foul trouble early on, which weakened their interior defence. Despite a last-chance effort in the last quarter, where they pressed and tallied steals, it was too late to make a significant impact. Although the boys played brilliantly, the game ended with a 50-31 victory in favour of VSA.

Looking ahead, the boys are determined to bounce back in their next game against West Island School, aiming for a more favourable outcome.

A GRADE RUGBY – BY COACH CHRIST TAGGERT

The A grade rugby boys finished their season this week at the Bill Williams 7s tournament. During the group stages, they managed to win 2 out of the 3 games scoring some great team tries along the way. This qualified the boys to play in the plate final against HKIS. After some inspirational words from Coach Taggart, the boys got off to a magnificent start, lighting up the stadium, and crowd, with two quick tries. However, the group stages had taken a massive toll on the squad and left us with a number of injuries and HKIS were able to fight back to win the game by 3 tries to 2. For our year 13 students this will be their last game of rugby for SIS and they showed a lot of fight and desire on the pitch until the very end of the match, well done boys.

B GRADE FOOTBALL – BY COACH JAMIE ATKINSON

B Grade Football began their HKSSF season away at Po Kong Village Road against Kwun Tong Maryknoll College. There were a few pre-match nerves among the squad to start the match but the team began to settle after the first few minutes. SIS pressed forward for an opener and completely dominated the remainder of the half with multiple chances.  Superb saves by the KTMC goalkeeper kept the score nil-nil going into halftime. The start of the second half was more of the same with SIS failing to find the first goal. Eventually SIS found an opening as Ollie Phillips pressurised the keeper to snatch the team’s first goal of the season. SIS continued to get multiple shots on goal but couldn’t find the back of the net. SIS held on to a 1-0 victory. A solid start to the season before a big game against DBS in two weeks
