Principal’s Message
Principal’s Vlog
Dear Parents and Guardians,
At South Island School, we take great pride in fostering a strong community spirit. This week, I am delighted to share some remarkable examples of our community coming together to provide the best possible environment for our children.
Our Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) hosted a fantastic parent dim sum morning on Tuesday. This gathering provided a fantastic opportunity for parents to connect and engage with one another while also asking pertinent questions to help them better support their children’s education. Our school’s social and emotional counsellors were present to offer guidance and support to parents regarding managing screen time for their children. Additionally, our leadership team was on hand to address any general inquiries about school life, ensuring that parents felt well-informed and involved.
We also had a significant event this week—the kickoff meeting for the construction of the new South Island School annex, which will be built over the existing upper playground. This project is a collaborative effort with the support of ESF (English Schools Foundation) and our lead consultant. ESF is committed to providing all schools with state-of-the-art facilities, and we are grateful for the opportunity to work closely with their facilities team to create an even better learning environment for our children. As the planning progresses, we will invite community members to join working groups, ensuring that the new building is tailored to meet the needs of our students and staff.
Furthermore, we are excited to announce that representatives from the International Baccalaureate (IB) will visit our school soon. This visit is part of an evaluation process to ensure that we are fulfilling the requirements of the IB program in terms of purpose, environment, culture, and learning. We extend our sincere gratitude to all the parents who have volunteered to be part of the focus group, as your involvement exemplifies the incredible support we receive from our parent community.
Lastly, I would like to thank all the parents, staff and students who came out last night to support our International Evening performances. Giving students the opportunity to share their passion and develop skills is a major driver for our Values in Action curriculum. Attending these events makes a positive difference to our students.
As we conclude another week filled with meaningful engagements, I wish you all a lovely and relaxing weekend. Thank you for your ongoing support and dedication to South Island School. Together, we will continue to nurture an environment where our children can thrive and reach their fullest potential.
Carolyn Andrews
Interim Principal

RECENT HAPPENINGS
(1) INTERNATIONAL EVENING
Last night was the annual SIS International Evening! With performances representing different cultures including India, Korea, China and America, our students took to the stage with their various talents from around the world. We were also treated to a break dancing performance from Linus Ho, a dancer who is supported by our charity partner Arts with the Disabled Association Hong Kong (ADAHK). In between performance sets, students and parents got to enjoy a few international themed activity stalls.
Through International Evening and our Dress Cultural Day today, we have raised over $13,000 for ADAHK, who promotes equal opportunities and inclusivity for people with disabilities in Hong Kong’s artistic field.
(2) PTA – DIMSUM MORNING
This past Tuesday morning, the PTA hosted 40 Year 8, 9, and 10 parents for a casual breakfast get together. SIS counsellor, Ms Kate Tse, held a talk and discussion on positive parenting and screen time regulation. Additionally, Ms Andrews and Head of Year 9, Ms Lewis, held a Q&A session with the attendees taking questions regarding student life at SIS and curriculum options. Overall, the session was a delightful gathering, and we look forward to the next one with the parents from the other year groups.
Thank you to the PTA for organising this event and to all the parents who came out despite the wet weather. Your keen participation is greatly appreciated and an encouragement to school leaders as we continue to make SIS a wonderful space for our students to learn and thrive.
**From the PTA**
We are thrilled to share the success of our Year 8, 9, and 10 Parents Dim Sum Morning. During the event, our counsellor, Kate, and the school counselling team shared valuable resources on regulating screen time, empowering parents to create a healthy digital balance for their children.
We would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to our Principal, Vice Principal, year leaders, and teachers for their presence and valuable contributions. They actively participated in answering parents’ questions and provided guidance on various topics such as language and option choices and achieving a balanced academic and extracurricular life.
Thank you to all the parents who attended and contributed to the success of this meaningful event. Your active participation and enthusiasm are truly appreciated.
We look forward to organising more engaging events and continuing to foster a supportive and inclusive school environment.
(3) GRAHAM SILVERTHORNE VISIT
This past Tuesday, former South Island School Principal Graham Silverthorne visited the school. Mr. Silverthorne served as principal of South Island School from 2010 – 2017. Mr Silverthorne caught up with many members of our staff and had a tour around the school, reminiscing about his time at SIS.
(4) Y12 IB FILM
This week, Year 12 IB Film students worked together to explore the 180-degree rule of compelling dialogue. Filming a short dialogue scene, students practised using on-set protocols, focusing the camera and using lighting and sound equipment to capture wide shots, over-the-shoulder shots, close-up shots and cut-ins. Special thanks to our brilliant Media technician, Helio Leung, for leading this activity.

This evaluation process ensures the education we offer at South Island School is the best it can be and fulfils the IB mission to “develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.
Over the past year, South Island has diligently collected documentation to ensure we meet IB requirements and held numerous self-study sessions where we evaluate ourselves on IB’s Programme Standards and Practices.
This process culminates in the Evaluation Visit, which will be taking place from 29 to 31 January. A team of IB evaluators will hold remote meetings with various stakeholders, focusing on our efforts to develop as a school. Thank you to all the Y7 – Y9 parents and Y12 – Y13 parents who have graciously volunteered their time for the parent interview portion of the review. Your input in this will be important as we seek the stamp of approval from IB.
We look forward to celebrating with you all when the evaluation process is complete.

PHASE YEAR 7-9
Message from Head of Phase Year 7-9:
Academic
Yr 6 Taster Classes
As part of the Primary-Secondary Transition Process, we organised Year 6 taster lessons at SIS, where we welcomed over 200 Yr.6 students from Bradbury and QBS for 2-day sessions. These taster classes gave the students a glimpse into the school environment and a preview of their future lessons. Our Year 9 prefects played a vital role in supporting these sessions, warmly greeting all students in the mornings and assisting during break and lunchtimes. Additionally, our Year 8 prefects were instrumental in guiding the classes to their respective timetable lessons, showcasing their leadership skills and exemplifying IB learner attributes such as Caring and being Communicators.
During this transition period, the Year 6 students also had the opportunity to meet their Head of Year, Ms. Alice Lewis. Ms. Lewis warmly welcomed the students, emphasising the importance of a supportive and inclusive school community. She encouraged the students to ask questions and express any concerns they may have and assured them of the guidance and support provided by the pastoral team as they transition to Year 7. This interaction with Ms Lewis fostered a sense of belonging and reassurance among the Year 6 students as they prepared for the next chapter of their educational journey.
Options Process
The Year 9 students are currently engaged in the options process, with assemblies, vertical tutoring, and PLC time dedicated to helping them make informed decisions. We also organised the Year 9 Curriculum Options Evening, which saw a fantastic turnout of parents. Teachers, Heads of Faculty, and upper school students were present to provide advice and information on specific subjects.
Furthermore, the Year 8 into Year 9 Options Process is underway. Students have been researching possible Creative Arts options and engaging with their Year 9 Co-tutors to gain insights from a student’s perspective. A Padlet has been shared with students and parents to address any outstanding questions before submitting the Options forms. A gentle reminder that Year 8 and Year 9 GCSE option choices are due on Tuesday, 6th February.
Year 9 Global Thinking Community Projects – Service Learning in Action
The Year 9 Community Projects have been launched, and students are currently in the initial stages of the process, collating ideas within their groups. We appreciate the support from parents as students embark on these projects, which form an essential part of their MYP curriculum.
Values in Action:
Family Bauhinia Celebrations
We celebrated the annual Family Bauhinia Dancefest, where students (and even teachers) showcased their dances in a fun and high-spirited manner. Congratulations to Bahay for emerging as the winner in this closely contested competition. This year, we created a CAS Project Opportunity for our Year 12 to help organise these FB events. Well done to all participants! We can’t wait to launch the Talent Show that will take place in term 2. Watch this space for more.
DEIJ Assembly
Our Term 2 assembly focused on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ). We aimed to raise awareness among students regarding the appropriateness of language usage and the harmful effects of insulting words that target specific groups of people. The students were highly engaged during the assembly, and we believe the message was well understood.
Wellbeing:
Collaboration with Pastoral Team and Counselling Services
We are pleased to announce that a Year 8 Girls Group lunch date has been initiated by Kate Tse. This lunchtime Girls Group will run for five weeks and feature fun themes ranging from Arts and Crafts to K-pop dance. The aim is to provide a quieter space for girls to form friendships and engage in well-being activities.
The PTA dim sum morning on managing screen time and positive parenting was a success. Our counselling and social worker team delivered a presentation to Family Bauhinia parents, sharing key strategies and ideas to support healthy relationships and positive device usage at home. Suggestions for alternative activities to screen time, such as playing board games, cooking a family meal, and taking a family hike, were discussed.
We appreciate the ongoing support from parents and our students and staff’s dedication to making these events and initiatives successful. Thank you for being an integral part of our school community.
Best regards,
Ms Syrita Nicholas
PHASE YEAR 10-11
Message from Head of Phase Year 10-11:
Curriculum
Exam Preparation for Year 11 Students:
Our Year 11 students are fully engaged in their exam preparation as they gear up for the 2024 I/GCSE examination series. The exams will take place between April 26th and June 19th, with contingency days scheduled at the end of June. A separate communication has been sent to Year 11 parents and families with detailed examination information.
To further assist our Year 11 students in their exam preparation, we have organised enrichment sessions in collaboration with Elevate Education. On January 26th, they will cover the topic “Ace Your Exams”. The remaining enrichment time for Year 11 students will be dedicated to exam preparation, allowing them to maximise their efforts.
Year 10 and Year 11 Academic Progress:
Year 10 and Year 11 students are currently at crucial stages in their academic journey. Year 11 students have completed their mock examinations, while Year 10 students have covered more than half of their first year of study. In the upcoming weeks, both year groups will receive their PCC2 reports, which will provide valuable insights for planning their next stage of learning.
Values in Action
Common shared humanity was the theme of our start-of-year assembly, and all students were invited to consider how they could contribute to making the school an inclusive place where diversity is celebrated. Many students in Years 10 and 11 also had the chance to listen to Peter Gaspar, a Holocaust survivor, in a special assembly last Friday. This was an opportunity for our students to continue to reflect on this theme.
Well-Being
At our South Island School, fostering a supportive environment is at the heart of our mission to promote student well-being. We understand that feeling safe, supported, and accepted is essential for a positive educational experience. That’s why, during our start-of-year assembly, we emphasised the values of respect and kindness among all students.
We wanted to ensure that every student heard a clear message about the importance of these values in our school community. By emphasising respect and kindness, we aim to create a safe and nurturing space where students can thrive academically and emotionally.
When students feel supported and accepted, they are more likely to approach their studies with a positive frame of mind. We hope the message conveyed during the assembly has resonated with our students and helped set a positive tone for the new year.
Ms Laura Beaumont
PHASE YEAR 12-13
Message from Head of Phase Year 12-13:
Curriculum
As we turn over the page to a new calendar year, the academic achievements of our students, along with their pressures – increase. Year 13 students completed a high-stress two weeks full of mock exams, which helped them get used to the procedures and structures before their real final exams in May. They now know to carry their water in clear water bottles and won’t be surprised when they hear “the time remaining is five minutes. Please ensure you draw a line through any work that you do not wish to be marked”. The next Year 13 PCC will consist of their mock exam grades, predicted grades for higher education, and next steps to help them be the best they can be for their exams in May, when they can hear for the final time “The examination has ended. Please stop writing immediately. Do not make any additions or amendments to your answers.”
The Year 12 students have also stepped up their academic work, as they begin their EE process. IB DP students have been allocated EE subjects and supervisors, and will begin the EE process now. This will run until October next academic year. The students have put together an interesting collection of proposals such as:
- How do P.L. Travers and Roald Dahl create dreamlike worlds?
- Investigating the Effect of Copper Tube Temperature on the Magnetic Braking Force Experienced by a Falling Magnet.
- Analyzing the socio-economic effects of MTR expansion on property values and development in different areas of Hong Kong.
Over the next few months, students will be doing preliminary research and working with their essay supervisors to refine their research questions.
Values in Action
With the Year 13s focused on mocks, January has been an opportunity for the Year 12 students to put their values in action by taking more leadership roles throughout the school. I have been very proud to see Year 12 students take important roles in Casa MaD Week and International Evening.
They have also begun shadowing the Year 13 prefects in preparation for fully joining the team next year. This includes taking over break and lunch duties – supervising younger students throughout the school to make sure South Island School remains a safe and welcoming environment for all our students.
Well-Being
Over the Christmas break, our Social Worker Ms. Kamy Yeung continued to run the Mental Health First Aid course. Our Senior School students do a fantastic job understanding our values (particularly in this case our focus on wellbeing) and bringing them to life. This always comes up in conversations I have with parents and other members of the community who are interested in South Island School – which always makes me tremendously proud.
Mr Hin-Hey Lam
Student Celebrations
(1) MATT WANG (10S1) – HONG KONG TECH CHALLENGE JUNIOR
Big shoutout to Matt Wang (10S1), whose team won the VEX ROBOTICS COMPETITION EXCELLENCE AWARD at the Hong Kong Tech Challenge Junior 2023-2024 Finals. This Excellence Award recognizes overall excellence in the teamwork challenge, the skills challenge, and the judge challenge. The Excellence Award incorporates all the criteria of the Design Award (which recognizes the robot’s unique and feasible design), plus the added component of a team’s on-field performance at the event.
With the win, Matt and his team will now represent Hong Kong at the VEX World Championship to be held in Dallas, USA in May 2024. This is also the second consecutive year that we have achieved this prestigious honour.
Matt’s team has been successful during this robotics season, as early in Term 1 they were crowned Robot Skills Champion at the CREATE U.S. Open Robotics Championship. Not only were they champions, but the team also took 2nd place in the Teamwork award, showing that Matt and his team not only achieve great results but do so in an open and collaborative manner.
After this season, Matt will unfortunately no longer be eligible to compete in the VEX IQ team due to age restrictions. However, he is keen to start and lead a VEX IQ team in SIS and, through his interest in robotics, make a difference to younger students at SIS.
(2) JAY & LLOYD HAN – KENDO
Jay Han (07M2) recently finished as 3rd runner up at the 13th Hong Kong Open Junior Kendo Championships hosted by the Hong Kong Kendo Association and 2nd runner up at 10th KRA President Kumdo tournament by the Korean Kumdo Association.
With his older brother Lloyd (09M2), Jay has been practising Kendo since 2019, training two times a week outside of school. Jay and Lloyd recently passed their first-dan exam, a significant milestone in Kendo as they have moved from junior to senior ranks.
Congrats Jay and Lloyd. We look forward to seeing you progress through your training!
(3) LYNNE LEE – KENTUCKY INTERNATIONAL ART COMPETITION
Awesome job to Lynne Lee (08B2), who was awarded the Gold Award at the Kentucky International Art Competition. Hosted by Morehead State in Kentucky, Lynne was one of hundreds of students around the globe to be showcased in the exhibition. The theme of the competition was Nature and People, and Lynne produced a space-inspired piece.
Great efforts Lynne! We can’t wait to see your next piece of art!
(4) SEAN WONG – HONG KONG – MACAU INTERPORT SWIMMING COMPETITION 2023
Big shoutout to Sean Wong (12K2) for his efforts at the 59th Hong Kong – Macau Interport Swimming Competition 2023. Representing Hong Kong, Sean swam in the 200m Individual Medley and finished first with a time of 2:13.90. In his first competition as a national team member, Sean had a great experience swimming against the best competition from Macau, and his results are a testament of his dedication and determination in the pool.
Congrats Sean!
(5) TOSHI IWATA (11N2) – CROSSROADS FOUNDATION
Congratulations to Toshi Iwata (11N2), who has completed 200 volunteer hours at the Crossroads Foundation!
Toshi mainly helps in the Hong Kong Distribution Department, where he assists social workers in supporting the people they are working with. These groups include refugees, poverty-stricken families and those affected by floods/typhoons. Toshi is also involved with the administration tasks of the warehouse, such as receiving, unloading, and distributing shipments and managing the stock system.
Whether it was interacting directly with the marginalised or completing basic warehouse tasks, Toshi made a huge difference to our Hong Kong community in his 200 hours of volunteering. The work he did in these hours was very rewarding for him as he was able to help refugees and other marginalised people restart their lives. Toshi was also able to find a way to utilise his English, Cantonese, and Putonghua language skills, with a sprinkling of Spanish and Tagalog, to connect and converse with people he would come across.
Amazing work Toshi! You have truly made a difference.
If you are interested in volunteering at the Crossroads Foundation, please visit their website: https://www.crossroads.org.hk/home/connect/volunteer-with-us/
(5) COLEMAN CHOW (07S1) – HONG KONG ARTISTIC GYMNASTICS OPEN & NOVICE CHAMPIONSHIPS 2023-2024
Congratulations to Colman Chow (07S1) for his amazing performance at the Hong Kong Artistic Gymnastics Open & Novice Championships 2023-2024 held last Saturday. He took home gold medals in both floor exercise and vault. The two golds helped carry Colman’s score to the top in the All Around, finishing as the champion! Colman’s hard work and dedication to the sport has yield amazing results and we look forward to see Colman continue to grow in gymnastics!
Great job Colman!

SIS SPORTS!
(1) ISSFHK GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS – by Coach Paul Murtagh
The ISSFHK Golf Championships took place last Wednesday at the picturesque Kau Sai Chau Public Golf Course. With just under 100 golfers teeing off, South Island Boys and Girls were among the course’s competitors last week and had a relatively successful day. Sonya Wong and Michelle Wong both placed in the individual scoring competition with a 2nd and 3rd place finish, respectively, in the Girl’s (Gross Score) division, with Sonya also finishing 3rd in the Girl’s Net score division. The SIS team, consisting of Michelle, Sonya, Genie Lo and Joshua Ngai, finished in the middle of the pack with in 8th place.
Great job golfers!
(2) U12 BOYS BASKETBALL – by Coach Darin Slethaug
The U12 basketball team had a very exciting performance in the semifinals versus West Island. After SIS was leading by 5 points starting the 4th quarter, West Island began to get hot from 3-point range, hitting several 3-pointers in the home stretch. With 40 seconds left, WIS tied the game 33-33 with another 3-point shot. This sent the game into overtime. In OT, South Island regained their composure, dominated when needed, and made key stops defensively. The final score was 40-34, and SIS will now play for a gold medal in the finals next week!
(2) U14 BOYS BASKETBALL – Captain Aiden Fu
The U14 boys took on ESF Rivals West Island School in the ISSFHK U14 Silver Semifinals. With a shot for gold on the line, the U14 boys came out strong against a strong West Island team they lost to by 20 in their last matchup. An evenly matched first quarter saw the Stingrays battling hard on defence while getting buckets in the paint through cuts and putbacks. However, even with WIS missing some key players, they still managed to fight back and took control in the game in the second quarter. The SIS boys fought hard and gave their best to overcome the challenge but WIS’s top players kept the lead from shrinking. The final score was 54 – 43 to WIS. The boys are proud of the way they fought through the whole game and recognise their improvement. Next week, they battle against German Swiss in hopes of a well earnt bronze medal finish in their final match of the season.
(4) U16 BOYS BASKETBALL – Captain Cyrus Yu
This Thursday, the U16 South Island boys basketball team once again faced off against ESF rivals Sha Tin College in the ISSFHK playoffs. It was an intense matchup with both teams showcasing their offensive and defensive prowess.
Right from the start, both teams got hot from the outside, knocking down three-pointers and jump shots with great accuracy. The game became a fast-paced battle of offensive firepower. Both teams were neck and neck in scoring, trading blows and constantly matching buckets.
With a spot in the finals on the line, the game was a closely fought battle. Both teams displayed exceptional will and skill. Despite their best efforts, however, the Stingrays were unable to come out on top, falling just short to Sha Tin College with a final score 54 – 52. The U16 boys will be facing off against West Island next week in a battle for bronze.
(5) U14 TOUCH RUGBY – Coach Mark Wright
The SIS boys and girls U14s touch rugby team had a great day at the CDIS touch tournament on Friday.
The U14 Boys showcased some fantastic individual skills during the early rounds of the tournament, but under rookie coach Mr Au, they started to play together as a team and ended up winning the bronze medal in the tournament.
The girls continued their winning streak of the U14 touch circuit, led by team Captain and top try scorer of the day Louise Lindsay. After winning all their group games, they beat KGV in the final to secure the trophy.
(5) U12 GIRLS BASKETBALL – by Coach Martin Pate, Captain Natalie Huang & Vice Captain Clarice Chow
The U12 Girls Basketball team continued their unbeaten run and performed superbly in the semi-finals of the ISSFHK Championship play-offs against Nord Anglia International School. The team had a great first half leading 20 – 5 heading into halftime. The offence was led by Natalie Huang, who was on fire from long distance, along with transition buckets from Clarice Chow and Penelope Wilde. All squad players were rotated on the court and featured throughout the game and the U12 girls ran out 26 – 8 winners. On to the finals next Wednesday against CAIS.
(6) B GRADE FOOTBALL – by Jamie Atkinson
After the winter break, SIS resumed their season with a derby game against old ESF rivals West Island School. With bragging rights on the line, SIS were out of the blocks fast as they piled on some early pressure. After some nifty work in midfield, Hugo Teng found space on the box’s edge to curl a brilliant effort in off the post to give SIS the lead. WIS came back into the game and was only stopped by a superb double save from Christian Li. WIS then equalised from a corner, and the sides went in 1-1 at halftime. The second half saw some exciting play, with both teams looking for a winner. Jayden Lee came agonisingly close as he crashed a shot off the bar. In the end, the game remained 1-1. SIS are still in the hunt for a semi-final place and will be back in action next Monday against another ESF rival, Island School.
