Scouts & Leaders – 30Hour First Aid Course
Lionel Troy (11B2) and two Scout leaders successfully completed a 30-hour first aid course. They are now official first aiders, with a duty to provide immediate assistance if they come across an accident.
The course was organised by the Hong Kong Scout Association and taught over three weekends in November. Highlights included CPR, how to stop bleeding, bandaging for fractures, how to recognise signs of concussion, helping someone who is choking and what to do if someone faints, has a stroke, or a seizure. It also includes wilderness first aid, like handling a heat stroke or what to do if you are bitten by a snake.
Two leaders at 150th Hong Kong Scouts, including Hana Sawada (mother of Jayden in Y7 and Lucas in Y10) and Ding Hsu Ling (mother of Jo En in Y7 and Amelia in Y11) also completed the course. The goal is to always have qualified first aiders on outings. Scouts study first aid as soon as they join a group. They are expected to handle emergencies on a hike or camp, several hours’ walk from the nearest road.
When they turn 13, Scouts are all encouraged to attend a two-day first aid course or a three-day course on fire safety. By the time they move to Venture Scouts (age 15-21), they aim for the full 30-hour course.
It’s a great opportunity – and these skills will all get to be put to good use in the future.
